The black spruce is a tree species belonging to the Pinaceae family native to North America, from Newfoundland Island to western Alaska.
It is a slow-growing, upright conifer species. It is a small, evergreen tree with a straight trunk and a scruffy, narrow crown with rather short, drooping branches with upward-pointing tips.
The cone-shaped cones are the smallest of all firs, the black spruce differs from the white spruce in that the needles are shorter and the cones smaller.
